I have to admit, I’m getting pretty excited about Hungary.
It’s one of the destinations I’ll be experiencing firsthand on our Danube River cruise this November, and the more I learn about it, the more I’m looking forward to stepping off the ship and exploring.
Hungary is one of those destinations that can easily get overlooked in favor of Italy, France, or Spain. But if you’re planning a European vacation, or considering a river cruise, I think it deserves a closer look.
There’s incredible food, wine, history, architecture, beautiful countryside, and of course, Budapest.
So in preparation for our cruise, I’ve been doing my homework. Here’s what has me excited about visiting Hungary.
Budapest: Where History Meets Modern Europe
For many travelers, Budapest is the star of the show.
The Hungarian capital sits along the Danube River, with the historic Buda side on one bank and the more modern Pest side on the other. Together, they create a city that manages to feel both grand and approachable.
You’ll find beautiful historic architecture, lively cafés and pubs, local shops, museums, and plenty of places to simply wander and see what you find. Just like most European cities, you don’t necessarily need to have every minute planned.
Sometimes the best travel memories happen when you turn down a street because something looks interesting.
Don’t Miss the Views from Fisherman’s Bastion
One of the places high on my list is Fisherman’s Bastion, located in the Buda Castle area.
The terrace offers incredible panoramic views across Budapest and the Danube and great photo opportunities. Here you’ll see how beautiful Budapest is from above, and why a Danube River cruise is such a great way to experience this part of Europe.
Come Hungry…
Hungarian cuisine is hearty, flavorful, and definitely not afraid of paprika. Of course, goulash is one of the dishes you should try.
It began as a simple meal prepared by shepherds and has evolved into one of the country’s most recognizable dishes. It’s typically made with meat, vegetables, and paprika, although you’ll find different variations throughout Hungary.
But don’t stop at goulash.
Hungary has a long culinary tradition that includes everything from savory dishes to pastries and sweets. One of the best ways to experience a destination is through its food, and Hungary looks like it will be no exception.
And Then There’s the Wine
If you know me, you know wine is a selling point for a destination. Hungary has seven major wine-growing regions, each with its own characteristics and traditions.
You’ll find everything from crisp white wines to fuller-bodied reds, along with famous wine regions and opportunities for tastings.
To me there is nothing better than sitting somewhere beautiful with local wine in your glass and a plate of regional food in front of you. That’s the experience.
Hungary’s Rich Folk Culture
Hungary isn’t just beautiful architecture and good food. The country also has a strong folk culture, with traditional crafts and artistic traditions still being preserved today.
Museums, artisans, and cultural workshops offer visitors a chance to see traditional Hungarian embroidery, pottery, and other crafts. This is the part of travel that is fascinating, because it gives you a better understanding of the people and history behind a destination.
You aren’t just looking at an old building. You’re getting a glimpse into how people lived, worked, celebrated, and created for generations.
Beyond Budapest: Discover the Hungarian Countryside
While Budapest deserves plenty of attention, Hungary extends far beyond its capital.
The Hungarian countryside offers a completely different experience, with rolling landscapes, farms, vineyards, villages, and wide-open spaces.
One fascinating area is Hortobágy National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its vast grasslands and traditional pastoral culture. It’s home to horses, cattle, sheep, birds, and other wildlife.
There’s also Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe. During the warmer months it becomes a popular destination for swimming, boating, water sports, relaxing, and enjoying the surrounding vineyards.
The northern shore is generally quieter and more relaxed, while the southern shore is known for a livelier atmosphere.
For travelers who want to see more of Hungary beyond the capital, these areas offer a completely different perspective on the country.
Why Hungary Works So Well on a European River Cruise
Budapest is one of the major highlights of Danube River cruises, making it an easy destination to experience as part of a larger European vacation.
A typical Danube River cruise itinerary can include multiple European countries, with stops in places such as Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, and Germany depending on the route. And Budapest is a pretty spectacular place to begin or end that journey.
There’s something special about arriving in a city by river and seeing the architecture and skyline from the water. It’s a very different perspective than arriving by plane and heading straight to a hotel.
Is Hungary Worth Adding to Your Europe Travel List?
Absolutely! Especially if you’re looking for a European destination that offers history, culture, food, wine, beautiful scenery, and great value without feeling like you’ve simply followed the same European itinerary everyone else is taking.
And if you’re considering a European river cruise, Hungary is one of the destinations I’d put on your radar.
As for me, I’m looking forward to finding out what Hungary is really like this November. I will be eager to report back. And yes, I’ll probably have opinions about the wine.
