5 Common Italy Travel Planning Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Planning a trip to Italy sounds pretty simple. Pick the cities, book the hotels, find some restaurants, and go.

Until you realize Italy has a lot of choices, and not every great hotel, destination, or itinerary is going to be a great fit for you.

That’s where Italy travel planning can go sideways.

The biggest mistakes I see aren’t necessarily about choosing the “wrong” destination. They’re about building a trip that doesn’t match the way you actually like to travel. And that can cost you more than money. It can cost you time, energy, and the experience you were hoping to have.

Here are five common Italy travel mistakes, and what to do instead.

Mistake #1: Choosing Where to Go Before Thinking About How You Like to Travel

Someone tells me, “I want to go to Italy.”

Great. But that’s only the beginning.

Do you want long lunches, lazy afternoons, beautiful scenery, and a slower pace? Or do you want to see as much as possible, visit the major sights, and pack every day with something new?

Those are two very different Italy vacations.

One traveler might be happiest spending a week in Puglia, settling into one beautiful villa and really getting to know the area. Another might love ten days split between Rome, Florence, and Venice.

Same country. Completely different trip.

The fix: Start with how you travel, not just where you want to go.

This is one of the most important parts of Italy trip planning. Your travel style should help determine the destinations, number of hotel changes, activities, transportation, and even the time of year you visit.

I don’t believe in taking a generic Italy itinerary and trying to make every traveler fit into it. The itinerary should fit the traveler.

Mistake #2: Booking Italy Travel Based on Price Alone

I completely understand wanting a good value. I do, too. But there’s a difference between paying less and getting more value for your money.

The cheapest flight might have three layovers and land at 1:17 a.m. The cheapest hotel might be 45 minutes from the places you actually want to visit. And those bargain dates might put you in Italy during a time when your favorite restaurant, shop, or family-run business is closed for the season.

A hotel outside the historic center might look like a fantastic deal compared with one in a more convenient location. But if you’re taking taxis or spending 20 minutes walking every time you want to get somewhere, those savings can disappear pretty quickly.

And then there’s Ferragosto, the traditional August holiday period when many Italians take their own vacations. Depending on where you are, businesses may close or operate on different schedules.

The fix: Look at the whole trip, not just the price of the hotel or flight.

Location, transportation, season, hotel quality, convenience, and what you actually want to do all matter. Sometimes spending a little more upfront saves you time, hassle, and frustration once you’re there. That’s value.

Mistake #3: Trying to See Too Much in Too Little Time

This one is incredibly common with first trips to Italy.

Rome! Florence! Venice! The Amalfi Coast! Tuscany! And somehow we’re going to do all of that in seven days.

Technically? Maybe.

Enjoyably? That’s another question.

Moving hotels every two nights, constantly packing and unpacking, rushing from one landmark to the next, and spending hours in transit can turn your Italian vacation into a logistics exercise. You’ll see a lot. But you may not actually experience much.

The fix: Build in breathing room.

Instead of trying to squeeze Rome, Florence, and Venice into one week, consider spending four nights in Florence and taking a day trip to Siena or Lucca. You can still explore beyond Florence without moving hotels every other day.

And this is one reason I love the idea of slow travel in Italy. Sometimes the best part of a trip isn’t another attraction. It’s sitting down for a long lunch, wandering a neighborhood without a schedule, or having enough time to go back to the little wine bar you loved the night before.

You don’t have to see everything to have an incredible trip. In fact, trying to see everything can be exactly what gets in the way.

Mistake #4: Booking the Wrong Location

This one can be easy to overlook when you’re comparing hotels online.

You find a beautiful property at a great price and think, “Perfect!”

Then you arrive and realize you’re 30 minutes from the things you actually wanted to do.

Or the hotel is technically in Tuscany, but you’re spending your vacation in a car because it doesn’t make sense for the itinerary you’ve planned.

The fix: Choose your hotel location based on your itinerary—not just the hotel itself.

Where you stay in Italy matters. A hotel can be wonderful, but if it’s inconvenient for your plans, it may not be the right hotel for this trip. This is especially important when deciding between staying in a city center, countryside property, hilltop town, or resort area. The right location depends on what you want your days to look like.

Do you want to walk out your door and be at dinner in five minutes?

Do you want a peaceful countryside retreat where you’ll spend more time at the property?

Do you want to use one location as a base for exploring several towns?

There isn’t one “best” place to stay in Italy. There is a best place for your trip.

Mistake #5: Booking Italy at the Wrong Time of Year

When you visit Italy can have a surprisingly big impact on your experience.

July in Tuscany and September in Tuscany are not the same trip. August on the Amalfi Coast is not the same experience as May.

And shifting your dates by even a week or two can sometimes make a meaningful difference in availability, crowds, weather, and pricing.

The fix: Be flexible before you get too attached to your dates.

Italy’s shoulder seasons can be fantastic. Late spring and early fall can offer a great balance of comfortable weather, fewer crowds, and a different pace than the height of summer.

And there are some experiences that are worth planning around.

Want to experience Tuscany during harvest season? That’s a different trip than visiting in July.

Want to explore the Italian lakes without the height-of-summer crowds? Your dates matter.

This is where local knowledge and experience can make a real difference. You don’t just want to know when Italy is popular. You want to know when a particular destination is at its best for the kind of trip you want to have.

The Bottom Line

The biggest Italy travel planning mistake is trying to plan the trip before figuring out the traveler. Your perfect Italy itinerary isn’t necessarily the one with the most destinations, the most famous hotels, or the lowest price. It’s the one that makes sense for you.

How you like to travel. How much time you have. What you want to experience. And how much moving around you’re comfortable with.

That’s where an Italy travel advisor can make a difference. Not just by making reservations, but by helping all the pieces of your trip actually work together. Because the real cost of planning Italy travel alone isn’t just booking the wrong hotel or paying too much for a flight.

It’s coming home thinking, I wish we’d done that differently.

And I’d much rather help you avoid that part.

If you’re too busy to spend months researching—or simply don’t want to—working with an Italy travel advisor can save you time, prevent costly mistakes, and help create a trip that actually fits how you travel.
